I’m going to be honest…I googled Pippin a couple of times before going to the show and read the press release, and I still wasn’t able to say what it was about or know what to expect. I knew that it was about a prince who’s trying to find purpose in his life. And that’s it.

I had NO IDEA what I was in for, but a friend and I went last night and LOVED it.

From KCStarlight.com:

Fresh from winning four Tony Awards on Broadway in 2013, including Best Revival of a Musical, the high-flying PIPPIN has drawn rave reviews from theatre critics and audiences alike as it tours across the United States. This musical spectacle arrives at Starlight Theatre for a six-night run from Tuesday, June 30 through Sunday, July 5. Adding to the excitement for those who attend on the 4th of July is a free fireworks extravaganza immediately following the show!

They’ve “got magic to do, just for you”! PIPPIN, the most nominated Broadway musical of 2013, brings its high-flying thrills and talented company of 48 performers to Starlight Theatre on June 30-July 5. The national tour of this hit Broadway revival, which took home four Tony Awards®, brings to Kansas City audiences the beloved music of Stephen Schwartz, who also composed Wicked and Godspell, and sizzling choreography in the style of Bob Fosse. Tony winner Diane Paulus directs the dazzling production.

So basically, the show is focused on a circus troupe, lead by “Leading Player” (played by Sasha Allen, finalist on season 4 of The Voice):

They tell the story of Pippin, the son of Charlemagne.

Pippin

Pippin finishes school and doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life. But, he knows he wants to find his purpose and do extraordinary things. His stepmom and half brother want the throne of the Roman Empire, which Pippin is entitled to, and the Leading Player is trying to sway Pippin toward a life that is exciting, outstanding, SPECIAL.

Because the story is told by circus performers, it’s this amazing mix of life story, relationships, acrobatics, music, dance, and magic.

I had no idea what I was getting into with this one, but I HIGHLY recommend it. It’s not really for younger kids (there are some suggestive/racy parts and a few bad words), but it’s an incredible show for adults looking for a couple hours of entertainment, or bigger kids that will be wowed by the spectacle.

Tickets for PIPPIN at Starlight Theatre are on sale now for $12 to $92. Tickets are available online at www.kcstarlight.com, by calling 816.363.STAR (7827) or at the Starlight box office at 4600 Starlight Road, Kansas City, MO 64132. All performances begin at 8 p.m.

I was given tickets to the show in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own (as always).
