I recently said that I don’t like to get down on the floor and play with my kids. But, there are things I love to do with them….I love jumping on the trampoline, I love cranking up the radio and shaking some booty when we’re cleaning or cooking, and I love interactive video games that we can all play together (I’m not too excited about board games yet, though….those require more patience than I have at this point in our lives).

We set up the Wii in the living room (which we hadn’t used in several months…at least) and put in Just Dance Kids 2014. I was expecting some boring, little kid songs and a few old disco songs or something. But we started it up and Could. Not. Stop. Dancing. I literally had to peel myself away from the game so I could cook (and not burn) our supper. The potatoes barely came out edible, but they did, thank goodness.

The game has a great mix of “younger kid songs,” “hot pop songs for older kids,” and “all ages-parents and kids songs”. It’s rated E for Everybody, though, so all of the songs are appropriate for the littlest ones. As a matter of fact, some of my favorite songs to dance to are the “younger kid songs” but they’re all super catchy and danceable….I even find myself dancing to all of the intro music.

And of course, some are harder than others…the songs are clearly labeled based on difficulty and energy level, but some of the dance styles are harder for each of us. I’m not very good at the hip-hop choreography in the song “Get Down On It”, but the salsa-esque and contemporary moves come more naturally to me. Of course, we’ll keep practicing all of them, and (hopefully) get better.

The girls and I are having the most fun with the game, but hubs and my oldest got into it a little bit, too. I’m not competitive or anything (ahem), but I’m kind of kicking some butt with the high scores. The four year old, even if she can’t quite keep up with the moves yet, is having a blast, and the six year old is really good at it and enjoys it. It’s fun to watch them both focused on the dances and following along, shaking their booties, swinging their hips, and throwing their hands up.

And when the box says it’s “exercise in disguise”, it isn’t kidding. We played for less than an hour the first night, and I was sweaty, my blood was pumping, and my fitbit pedometer said that I’d had taken over two and a half miles worth of steps. I didn’t even do my two mile run that night because I had essentially already done it.

I may have also put a few of the other Just Dance titles on my Christmas wish list. But I’m not addicted or anything. Nope, not me. Ahem.
